1 used with verbs expressing movement meaning in or on a particular place: The men managed to jump onto the train while it was moving. | Some paint was dripping off the ceiling onto the floor.
2
a) be onto sb informal to know who did something wrong, committed a crime etc: The police are onto him.
b) be/get onto sb especially BrE to get in contact with someone: Get onto the hospital and see if they can spare extra nurses.
3 be onto a good thing/a winner informal to be in a very good situation that gives you many advantages: She's onto a real winner with that job.
4 if something such as a room looks or gives onto another room, a view etc, that is what you can see from that room or where that room leads: The main sitting area looked out onto a beautiful view of the hills.
